Rydal Cave

Rydal cave can be found on the north side out Loughrigg fell, where you have beautiful views of Rydal Water and beyond. A large pretty cavern left behind by quarry workings from many years ago. The cavern use to be called Loughrigg quarry and it was used to mine slate for the beautiful slate top roofs you see around the area and beyond. You can walk into the cave using the steppingstones that are laid in the beautiful crystal clear water. The walk is a great family favourite, not too strenuous with well worn paths along the way, although it does get a bit steep towards the cave. Why not take a picnic, its a great place for lunch.

To get to the cave one of the best routes is from White Moss carpark situated just north of Rydal water.  Car park grid ref. NY 351065 – It is well signposted from here, there is also toilets at the car park. Allow at least 1.5 hours. It can also be walked from Ambleside or Grasmere if you want a longer walk. Be sure to take a map, or an app with a map for navigation.

Pelter Bridge car park is also a good option located south of Rydal. Grid reference: 365 059
