This enjoyable hike was Alfred Wainwright’s favourite quoting it was “the best fell top of all”. It is not just a great fell, it has brilliant views over the northern fells down into the Buttermere valley and around towards the wild western mountain ranges Pillar, Great Gable and down into upper Ennerdale, where Englands most remote YHA lies, Blacksail hostel.

The walk takes you past Innominate tarn near the summit of Haystacks which means ‘the tarn with no name’. This is where Alfred Wainrights ashes are scattered.

We have provided a link on your right that shows a great circular 5 mile hike with an outline route on a map, where to park and more.

Haystacks stands at 597 meters above seal level.
