Just over from the hustle and bustle of Windermere Claife viewing station is only a short ferry journey away. This impressive structure was originally built in 1790s, it looks like a miniature castle, with old stone fire places that remain inside. Once used for luxurious dances and for hosting wealthy guests, take a step back in time and imagine what it was once like. It was originally erected as a viewing station so tourists could admire the views over Winderemere lake and beyond at a time when the Lake District was becoming more and more popular among tourists. The viewing station is one of the oldest in the Lakes. A small cafe and is just down from the building, with benches outside.
You can take the ferry from Bowness-On-Windermere over to Far Sawrey, a short 10 minute journey. Vehicles can be taken on the ferry along with bicycles and foot passengers. There is parking at the foot of the viewing station.
From the station there are some great shore walks and bike rides, one heading up to Wray Castle.
